Trude Geiringer and Dora Horovitz

The actress Margarethe Koeppke, Deutsches Volkstheater, (Volkstheater, Vienna). Circa 1927.

Vintage gelatin silver print. 21,4 x 15,4 cm. Mounted to original cream-colored card, photographer's logo label mounted below image, titled in pencil on the mount. Very minor retouching, otherwise a velvety matt print in excellent condition.

Trude Geiringer and Dora Horovitz opened a photography studio together in Vienna in the mid-twenties. The studio ran sucessfully until the mid-thirties when they were forced to flee Austria, due to their Jewish descent. Horovitz fled in 1939 through Belgium to France. Geiringer eventually ended up in the United States. Geiringer and Horovitz often photographed contemporary actors, such as in this photograph of the young Margarethe Koeppke who played the role of "Lulu" in Franz Wedekind's 1927 production at the Volkstheater.
